1988 -- 23' 0" MAKO

Cockpit: This was my second Mako. These were the "good ones" which were heavily built and used choice componets. In my opinion anything after 1994-95 were lacking in overall quality. This particular model was good, nothing fancy just a tough, heavy boat. The interior is rather tight compared to say a Dusky of same size. The console is large and the entire front of it is hinged to open so that you can access all systems, electronics, and batteries. Plenty of storage thru-out. I had a bimini top which provided a good amount of shade but really cuts down on your room. A T-top would be a better option for this boat. I had the factory leaning post with plenty of storage and room for cooler underneath. Bow area is shaped in a "U" fashion which gives you plenty of storage but cuts down on room..a raised casting platform would be a little nicer especially for serious fishing.


Construction: Like all older Makos this one is no different..heavy solid fiberglass hull. If considering making a purchase definately pay close attention to the transom and deck. These were both cored with marine plywood and while they were strong they were also prone to water intrusion over the years. People think wood is bad and the truth is it's not as long as it's properly encapsulated in fiberglass. Also check the fuel tanks...if it's original you better consider replacing it sooner or later. All these tanks were aluminum and foamed into place which means the foam usually traps moisture or water against the tank which translates into corrosion and a leaking tank so check it. One major flaw...the transom or lack's cut too low...with a baitwell full of water and two or three people in the rear the boat takes on water of the transom very easily and you really have to keep an eye on this. This boat almost sank twice because of boarding seas and it wasn't even really rough. Some owners have built a "false wall" out of starboard or fiberglass to help with the problem but it is a genuine design flaw.

Handling: Boat is very solid with no bangs or rattles is heavy and mine had an older Mercury 200 which was really probably also used a lot of gas..a nice newer Yamaha 250 would provide better speed and better fuel economy.

Engine Room: Again mine had older Mercury 200 which was hard on gas and top speed was around 35mph which is pretty slow by todays standards. Be careful of ones that have been retrofitted with full engine brackets (transom is marginally reinforced to support the tremendous leverage the bracket and motor produce).

General Comments: Overall a good boat..I personally would not purchase this model again..not as roomy as a Dusky, Bluewater, or Contender of same size. Low transom is bad design and dangerous. Alot of boat for the money..clean older models with newer power range from $7500 to $15K.
