Boat Reviews By Owners

1990 -- 28' 6" BERTRAM

Cockpit: Cockpit area is a roomy 85 sq. ft. with average storage compartments built into the gunnels and below decks. The helm affords excellent visibility and easy access to the cockpit. Moderate draft makes this boat an excellent all around craft. Twin engines make this boat very manuverable at all speeds.

Cabin: "Down below' there is just enough space for two people that travel light. A complete head with stand up shower and built in sink is adjacent to the galley area which includes sink, refrig, and alcohol/electric double burner. There is enough room for a brief overniter but anything more would be pushing it. This boat is ideal for a day boat.

Construction: As usual, this boat was built in the classic BERTRAM quality style. There is much attentiuon to detail every where you look. The Electric system is well laid out and the hull and stringers seal up and compartmentize below decks very well. Only problem I have encountered- When installing wiring of any length, be prepared to take apart most of the bost to run wires as the bilge/ void areas are well sealed up.

Handling: Twin 260- V8 power. Cuise at 3200 RPM/ 20 kts. a very smooth ride. You can tell you are in a 13,000 lb. boat. WOT 4400 rpms, boat flys.I feel it could use more horsepower and deeper pitched props. Diesel conversion is on the back burner. At 'speed' the boat has trouble doing evasive steering manuvers. Throttles and clutches are required for hi speed tight turns. So along with diesel conversion and prop work, I recommend a longer pair of rudders. With a full enclosure this boat loves rough water, however,it is a wet ride. Oher modifications to consider, fwd spray rails.

Engine Room: Boat has the original(very low hour) gas engines. They perform beautifully for what they are. Twin 260 hp Merc-cruiser V8s. Quiet smooth power. I personally feel the boat could use higher horsepower diesel engines. It would be fun to kick the max mph up to maybe 34 kts.

General Comments: I have been in love with boat for 10 years and last year she became mine. The prior owners spent truckloads of money outfitting her with the best electronics and custom fibreglass work. I recntly completed the custom arch and enclosure. Soon to be installed- Rybovich tuna chair- I cant wait!!!
