1983 -- 34' 0" IRWIN
Model: 34 Citation C/B sloop
Cockpit: Roomy cockpit, wheel steering, good helm visibility. Extra engine room access thru cockpit sole. Cockpit floor is too wide, hard to brace one's self when heeled, kept large fenders in cockpit for foot brace.
Cabin: Cabin design was one of high points of boat. Beautiful interior. Icebox could have been more accessable. Not a Hinckley but interior was fantastic for class of boat.
Construction: Well designed hull for sailing but a bit tender (shoal draft, c/b), should have ordered deep keel. Didn't really trust hull again after cabin sole once tore loose due to oil-canning while beating into heavy pounding seas. I refastened sole with larger and double amount of screws and never had any more trouble. I would never winter store an Irwin 34 with mast up, too much hull stress.
Handling: Sailed decently for shoal draft c/b but tender, would have preferred deep keel. Powered GREAT, 27 hp Yanmar was quiet and powerful. A lake and inland boat for sure, not a bluewater cruiser. Great engine/powertrain access.
Engine Room: Great boat under power, 27 hp Yanmar was quiet and powerful. Good engine access.
General Comments: Beautiful design, inside and out. The boat was fine for my Lake Erie cruising and gunkholing. Very comfortable interior. Decent, well equipt, well rigged boat for the dollar. However, always thought that hull should have been a little thicker but never had any more problems after re-fastening sole.
